I'll be away in London + Other stuff (most especially GameFAQs Character Battles rant)
Posted by Bahamut Nov. 20, 2008 @ 5:46 PM ESTWell, once again, I'm off to London and this time, I'm taking my laptop with me, so I can easily check my internet stuff daily and see how everyone is. Along with that, I could play any online games me, my sister and her boyfriend wish to play, but remember, NO WORLD OF WARCRACK! However, Team Fortress 2 would be good or anything else they have in mind. :)
Anything else we have in mind when I'm there? Nothing different from the last few trips there, but we'll be going to Oxford Street on the Saturday and go somewhere to eat for the Sunday evening. In Oxford Street, I should be able to spend the rest of my HMV vouchers, so I can't wait until then. :) There's a lot of CDs in mind right now, so I'll know which ones to look out for when I'm there.
I'll see you all on Monday, but while you're reading this, I have other things to talk about.
Final Fantasy VII
Right now, I'm playing FFVII. I started playing this 2 weeks ago and right now, I'm at the end of disc 1. This time through the game, I decided to do something different by trying to get the date scene with Barret in the Gold Saucer. I succeeded and what I got was a fucking hilarious scene! I'd tell you what happens, but incase you haven't, I recommend seeing it. :) I'm hoping to complete this game before Christmas, but I'll see how I do over the next 4 weeks.
The Simpsons
Remember when I previously mentioned a Top 25 Worst Simpsons episodes? Well, I've finally considered doing it and now, I'm going through every single episode starting from season 15. This will be one hell of a long torture, but I wish to get through this and create the list. However, incase there's so much suckage in the last remaining episodes of season 20, the list will not be published until the season finale. I know I'll be waiting a while before I can get it done, but just incase the writers do something else so bad that you wish to beat up everyone who's keeping this franchise alive. So far, I'm not even halfway through season 15 and I'm already finding this to be an awful task. *sigh* 100 or so episodes to go.
Stickam chat
Last Thursday, I was introduced to Stickam by BatDan and I've been having a lot of fun in the Newgrounds chatroom. Not only I've been enjoying all the topics discussed in there, I'm liking the feature of multiple users using live video at once. Yes, I've been using MY webcam a lot here and it's great! :D
There are several downfalls for Stickam, the main one being the amount of bugs on that site. We've had to change chat rooms THREE TIMES because of the fucking issues we've encountered. In one room, there were too many users who were stuck in the chat room and couldn't be kicked out no matter what and the other one ended up glitching itself and no-one was able to enter the chat. The third was the same as the first and now we're on our fourth chat room! Seriously, this site has more bugs than fucking MySpace, but I'm still going there for the NG chat room.
My only other complaint about the site is the MySpace-esque users we get. All of them are of no use to the place, but at least we can kick them out assuming there's no glitch. However, these kicks only last an hour rather than it being permanent, so some troll can keep re-entering the room spamming up the place all the time. It'd be more convenient if we were able to keep them off the chat room for good.
Besides the issues, I still like it. :)
GameFAQs' Character Battles
Some of you probably agree with me already, but GameFAQs Character Battles are a load of fucking shit! Whenever you go to GameFAQs, you will see a poll on top of the front page. You may want to contribute to the poll by choosing your desirable option. That's fine, but then you see this atrocity known as Character Battle, which goes on for a month or two every year. The idea itself isn't too bad, but when you see how it goes on this site, you'll realise how fucking ridiculous it truly is.
First, let's have a look at the winners for all the Character Battles so far:
Character Battle I - Link
Character Battle II - Cloud Strife
Character Battle III - Link
Character Battle IV - Mario
Character Battle V - Samus Aran
Character Battle VI - L-Block
And for the latest Character Battle, Link (AGAIN)! Now I'll agree that the winning characters are very reasonable considering they're video game icons. I mean, besides non-gamers, who doesn't know Link, Mario or Cloud? These are some of the most popular characters in video game history, but what really pisses me off is how these tournaments consist of nothing but extremely well known characters. Link has won three character battles now and really, other characters deserve to have the spotlight on them. If they keep Link and the other winning characters on future Character Battles, there's no way in hell we'll get others characters winning for once, unless it was some stupid ass "character" like L-Block.
Now L-Block as the winning character of Character Battle VI....Someone tell me, how the fuck is L-Block even a character?! I don't even consider it a character AT ALL, and this is a Character Battle, not an Object Battle. If you're gonna add "characters" such as L-Block and Weighted Companion Cube, then why not add other ridiculous shit such as mushrooms, pong balls, Chaos emeralds and Rick Astley while you're at it?! There are so many other ridiculous "characters" you could to the Character Battles, it's not even funny.
Do you know what's even sadder? These "characters" actually get far in the tournament. Seriously, look how far L-Block and Weighted Companion Cube went. L-Block got past the first two rounds, while Cube reached the quarter-finals. If they're considered as characters under GameFAQs' standards, they shouldn't have advanced further than the first round, but no, idiots like to vote them "for teh lulz!!!1" and then you see perfectly legitimate characters such as Kefka, Crash Bandicoot and Donkey Kong knocked out in the first fucking round!!
Someone tell me, besides internet meme influences, how on earth did something like Weighted Companion Cube beat Donkey Kong and Tails in the first round? To me, it makes no fucking sense, especially how Donkey Kong and Tails, two well known video game characters get beaten by something absurd (NOTE: I've yet to play Portal and may not get the Cube joke, but it's still not an actual character). Although Kefka wasn't against anything stupid, I still find it sad that he was out in the first round.
Really, with these "characters" entering these tournaments, legitimate characters have been left out in favour for them. Which characters, you might ask? Let me name 10 video game characters that could have made the cut for Character Battle VII, but aren't there:
Abe
Bomberman
Dr. Neo Cortex
Ecco the Dolphin
Jin Kazama
Lara Croft
Locke Cole
Pokemon Trainer
Pyramid Head
Spyro
There, 10 characters and all from different game franchises to each other. I'll admit, some of the characters I mentioned may not be brilliant in your opinion and not all the characters can fit in considering they had only 128 spaces, but at least they're more legitimate than a fucking Tetris block!
Have I mentioned the worst part about GameFAQs' Character Battles? No I haven't! For these tournaments, GameFAQs gives out prizes for those who make the most correct predictions on which characters will win for each and every battle. So what do you get for winning this contest?
MONEY!!!
That's right, money! Out of all the ways money can be given out, this is without a doubt one of the worst. Seriously, you don't even need to predict who'll get through each round, you KNOW who's going to get through the battles with ease. This is as bad as giving faggot chavs entitlement to EMA £30 a week.
Oh, and to take the fucking piss out of Link winning for the third or so time, GameFAQs decided to make one more Character Battle poll by adding all four different forms of Link, which are Classic, Young, Toon and CD-i Link. Do I even need to say anything about the last one? The sad thing is, CD-i Link is in second place and it's all because of 20000 or so YouTube Poop faggots. Seriously, if you voted for CD-i Link, FUCK YOU! I don't even see the amusement in the CD-i Zelda games, most especially the horrendous voice acting. It's so bad, I hear better voice acting in 4kids dubs, and that's saying something! Anyway, I'm at least glad Classic Link is winning in this stupid poll.
Maybe I'm taking an online poll too seriously, but when:
A) False characters enter these tournaments;
B) False characters beat perfectly legitimate characters;
C) One character wins more than once, especially Link;
D) This is supposed to reflect opinions on all the gamers who vote;
E) The polls are overrun by fanboys;
F) You win money by predicting who's going to win each battle;
G) Other reasons
YOU KNOW THERE'S SOMETHING FUCKING WRONG!!!
If I were to make my own Video Game Character contest, here's what my regulations would be:
1. They have to be actual characters, NOT objects.
2. Up to five characters per franchise.
3. When one character wins, they will not appear on any future contests, so others have a better chance at winning.
4. No money involved in any way!
5. Although GameFAQs has this rule, no rigging the votes by using proxies to vote for your favourite character hundreds of times.
Yep, that's five simple rules for a Character Battle I'd make. I'd love to make one that's a million times better than GameFAQs', but unfortunately, there might be a lack of interest. The best way to see how many would like to see an alternative Character Battle tournament would be to create a petition and see how many people sign up for it. Anyway, that's enough of GameFAQs (or LameFAQs or GameFAGs).
Weird chat with Omega-2
Me and Omega had this weird chat on MSN last week:

Summary:
- Replaying FFVII.
- Trying to watch through all the Simpsons episodes starting from season 15. It's not fun in the slightest.
- Newgrounds Stickam chat is fun. Thanks again BatDan!
- GameFAQs' Character Battles = Load of shit!
- Me and Omega had a weird chat.
And that's everything I wanted to mention. See you all on Monday (BUT! I'll still respond to comments I receive while I'm in London).
Updated: 05/06/09 7:26 PM 8 comments | Log in to comment! | Share this!(EDIT 11/11): Everyone, I got myself to playing one of the worst video games of all time: Big Rigs! And yes, it was hilariously bad. Driving through buildings, infinite reverse speed, driving up mountains, winning no matter how well my opponent did and of course, the "YOU'RE WINNER!" message. Certainly the worst game I've ever played.
I would like to see some "YOU'RE WINNER !" comments in this news post! :)
_____
My thoughts on the movie? IT WAS FUCKING HORRIBLE!!! It was so bad, I was ready to throw up while watching it. Without a doubt the worst film I've ever seen and my top 5 worst films before watching this were:
1. Kingdom of Heaven
2. Tom & Jerry: The Movie
3. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
4. I Am Legend
5. The Simpsons Movie
Despite all those movies being a pile of crap, they were at least better than Epic Movie. Also, to those wondering why I watched this film, I was curious to know how bad it truly was. Oh well, at least I've still avoided other movies such as Batman & Robin, Super Mario Bros. movie and a few others that are considered the worst movies ever made. Oh, and I am not even thinking of watching any of the High School Musical films.
So what awful thing will I do to myself next? Play what's said to be the worst video game ever? No, I'm not talking about ET or Superman 64. I'm talking about Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing, which looks more of a joke than a game. Also, whenever I finish a race in that "game", I'll get this amusing message:

Halloween
This Halloween was different from the other ones for me. For this night, I was invited to a Halloween party by a guy I know at one of my work placements. I went along and had fun, even though I didn't dress up like the majority did. I wasn't too bothered about it, though. Unfortunately, I couldn't stay out too late since I had to see my sister and her boyfriend at the coach station that night, but 3 hours was good enough for me.
Besides that, I didn't do a lot for Halloween. All I was doing for the week Halloween was on was playing through the Silent Hill games. However, I'm not playing through them as quick as I thought I'd be, so I'm only at the near-start of Silent Hill 3.
Games
Like I said just before, I've been playing through the Silent Hill games and in the middle of playing through 3. I intend to play through SH4 as well, despite it not being relevant enough to Silent Hill itself. However, what I didn't have in mind at the time when starting the marathon was getting Silent Hill: Origins.
I was hoping to wait until I get a PSP to get this game rather than getting the PS2 port, but from what I've heard, there isn't much of a difference between the two versions and I've not heard of any issues with porting the game to another console (e.g. Loading times on the PS1 version of FFVI), so soon, I plan to get Origins while my sister plans to get Homecoming for the PS3.
I'm aware that Homecoming isn't actually out in Europe yet, but PS3 is region free, so my sister can get the American version. It makes me wonder why it's been delayed in Europe when unless you can only get the Xbox 360 version, you can just order the game from America and not wait a few months until it's out in Europe. The only reason why this game might have been delayed is censorship issues. After all, that's what happened to the original Silent Hill where they had to make several changes to the European version.
I remember owning the American version of SH1 (this is going back to the days when my dad bought copied games rather than the real thing) and the grey children you see in the school were completely taken out in the European version. When me and my sister bought the real thing, we saw the mumblers that only appeared in the Amusement Park Sewers and we were like "What the hell happened to those grey children?" So a similar thing might be happening to Homecoming. :(
Other games I've played this month are Final Fantasy X, Audiosurf, Team Fortress 2 and Spore. FFX I was just trying to defeat the dark aeons and Penance. I was able to finish off Dark Bahamut, Dark Yojimbo, Dark Anima and Dark Magus Sisters (I was using an old save of mine and already defeated the other dark aeons), but sadly, I wasn't able to beat Penance in time. I've stopped playing this game for the time being to focus on the Silent Hill marathon and anything I'm playing on this laptop.
Audiosurf I got on my new laptop last week and had a lot of fun playing with the songs I have. I've been mainly playing songs on Ninja Mono Ironmode, which I'm fine at, but could do with more practice. I have to thank my friend :iconmikey-aofw: for introducing this game to me. Also, Team Fortress 2, I just finished downloading this game from Steam and I'm enjoying it. Right now, I'd love to try and get to the top of one of the Skyscraper maps. Also, I should definitely play this game whenever one of my friends (real-life or those I know on the Internet) are willing to play it as well.
Spore, I've created several creatures, despite only having the trial version of Creature Creator. I'd get the full game of Spore, but I'm concerned about the DRM issues. I don't like the idea of only being able to install this game on three different machines, but I'm more worried about the stories I've heard regarding DRM. Anyway, the demo version, you can see some of the Spore creatures I made at the bottom of this news post. NOTE: I do NOT intend to submit my Spore videos on ShitTube.
One other game in mind right now is World of Warcraft, but damn, I was hoping to avoid this game for the rest of my life. My sister really wanted me to replay it, so I thought I gave it another go. So I installed the whole thing with a ridiculous amount of fucking patches anyway, but as soon as I was about to create a character, I felt vomit in my mouth. No way in hell I'm gonna play this crap and now I'm wondering why I even wasted my time to get this game if all I'm gonna do is throw up at every little thing in it. Oh well, I've uninstalled it now and I am NOT getting it back! I've even destroyed my own account by changing my email and password to something unmemorable.
Also, uninstalling this game is a piece of cake. See?
So yes, more fun with games, even though the only retro game I've played over the last few weeks is Silent Hill 1. Oh well.
100th Flash
I'm afraid I've done jack shit in October. With writing up that Final Fantasy list and my new laptop, I've barely touched Flash. :( However, I'll try and do better this month, but I need to stay away from writing any other lists I've had in mind such as Top 5 Scariest Moments in Silent Hill and Top 25 Worst Simpsons Episodes of all time.
Summary
- I went out to a party for Halloween.
- I've been playing Audiosurf, Final Fantasy X, Silent Hill 1 - 3, Spore and Team Fortress 2.
- Thinking of getting Silent Hill: Origins for the PS2.
- I uninstalled World of Warcrap, yay!
- Not done anything on my 100th Flash in October.
Other crap
- I could care less about the whole fiasco with Johnathon Ross and Russell Brand's phone prank.
- A bit late, but I'd like to say happy 5th anniversary to my two friends who have been together for that long now! :D
- Here are my Spore videos:
Final Fantasy list is still here if you're interested
_____
UPDATE: video has been uploaded!! Now why can't Newgrounds support blip.tv's video embed? Oh well.
Since my 18th birthday, I've been considering a laptop. I had other ideas at first on what I should get with the money, but after some time to think about it, I decided to buy a laptop today. Yesterday, I saw this very nice laptop in Staples at £800 and thought, "Wow, this looks awesome!" and I asked my sister's boyfriends his thoughts on it. He liked it and recommended me to get it.
So now I'm typing on this laptop and so far, I love it! The only downfall is Vista, but I'll have to get used to it. For more information on the laptop I got, have a look here. If it doesn't work, just google P300-150.
Oh, and here it is!
Hello all and welcome to my Final Fantasy rankings of the main games. Since I've played every game in the main Final Fantasy series besides XI (Infact, I don't consider this as one of the games in the main series), I know I should make a preference of my least liked to most loved games Final Fantasy games. Before I start, let me say a few things:
1. THIS LIST CONTAINS SPOILERS!
THIS LIST CONTAINS SPOILERS!
THIS LIST CONTAINS SPOILERS!
THIS LIST CONTAINS SPOILERS!
THIS LIST CONTAINS SPOILERS!
(Said it five times to make it clear enough)
If you're in the middle of playing a Final Fantasy game for the first time or you've yet to play some of the games and plan to get them sometime, I highly recommend you stop reading right away.
2. By main series, that means no spin-offs such as Tactics or sequels like Final Fantasy X-2. This focuses on FFI - X and XII.
3. This list is not factual in anyway and I am not reflecting a general opinion on the games. The games in order and the comments are entirely my opinions! You are free to agree or disagree with anything here and if you hate this list with a passion and think you could make a better list, go right ahead.
4. The game titles go by the original Japanese and NOT the American titles. So Final Fantasy II and III on the SNES are known as Final Fantasy IV and VI respectively on this list!
5. Please take note that I have not played the original version for some of these games, so what I'm saying about some of these games are based on what I've played. Here are the versions of the games I played:
Final Fantasy - GBA
Final Fantasy II - GBA
Final Fantasy III - DS
Final Fantasy IV - PS1
Final Fantasy V - PS1
Final Fantasy VI - PS1
Final Fantasy VII - PS1
Final Fantasy VIII - PS1
Final Fantasy IX - PS1
Final Fantasy X - PS2
Final Fantasy XII - PS2
6. This list consists of over 12500 words. I don't expect everyone to read EVERYTHING! The reason why this is so long is because I explain every point as to what I liked/didn't like for those who want to know why exactly I liked/didn't like them, so I'm not going "The battle system is dreadful." without explaining shit as to why I hate it. If you want the simpler points, just the read the titles marked with "***"'s.
AND NOW FOR THE LIST:
11. Final Fantasy II
10. Final Fantasy VIII
09. Final Fantasy III
08. Final Fantasy XII
07. Final Fantasy I
06. Final Fantasy V
05. Final Fantasy IV
04. Final Fantasy X
03. Final Fantasy IX
02. Final Fantasy VI
01. Final Fantasy VII
First, let me say that there are bound to be people disagreeing with me here, most especially the fact that many retro FF fans consider this game to be overrated. Some even go as far as to calling it the worst Final Fantasy game ever. I won't argue about what they think and if you don't like FFVII, fine by me. I shouldn't be too bothered.
Anyway, what made this game so big was itself being the first 3D Final Fantasy game in the series as well as its debut to the Playstation. The storyline, the characters, the music, pretty much everything made this such a well known game. Of course, with it being so well known, like I said before, there's bound to be people calling it overrated and it's fine. This game won't please everyone, but it sure made the majority happy.
What I didn't like:
*** Useless items ***
Seriously, what was the point of items such as Tissue, 1/35 Soldier and Super Sweeper? The only thing they seemed to have done was spread hundreds of rumours, even though the FFVII rumour site I found is pretty interesting.
What I liked
*** It's the first FF game I ever played ***
Funny, I was wanting to get FFVIII when I heard about it. This was back in 1999 and when I asked for it for Christmas, my dad got me FFVII instead, simply because I didn't have any other games in the series, so he took the earliest release he could get me for the PS1. One of the very few moments where I'm glad my dad got me something else instead of what I actually wanted.
*** Superb characters ***
The main characters in this game were an odd bunch. You have Cloud with a massive sword, Barret with a machine gun on his arm, Aeris the flower girl, Red XIII the wolf-like beast and Cait Sith who's a cat riding on a fat Moogle toy. All the characters in this game are awesome and they all have their own backstory, so you get to know them all.
*** Astonishing storyline ***
Of course, this is one to talk about. At the start, you play as Cloud and as the newest member of AVALANCHE, you and the others are plotting to destroy all the Mako Reactors in Midgar starting with Sector 1. This kept me interested since they were terrorising Midgar and I wondered what Shinra were going to do with them. Along the way, Shinra became more and more of a nuisance to AVALANCHE and even resorted to blowing up a whole town of theirs just to try and get rid of them.
The other key part of the storyline is going after Sephiroth. The first thing he does in the game is killing several people including President Shinra in the Headquarters. After leaving Midgar, you hear Sephiroth's backstory and the game focuses more and more on Sephiroth as it progresses while Shinra persist to get in your way. As Sephiroth caused more chaos to the world, kills Aeris and summons meteor to the world, you'll then want to kick his ass once and for all.
Along with the storyline, many smaller events happen in the game. One of the greater examples are what Cloud says to certain characters, which affect the dating scene at the near-end of disc 1. All who have played FFVII should know you either have a date with Aeris, Tifa, Yuffie...Or even Barret. Most of the time, I get Aeris, but sometimes, I do my best to be nasty to her and hope I get someone else.
I was very impressed with the storyline overall and it kept me hooked until the very end.
*** Soundtrack = Masterpience ***
The music sets the mood for the whole game from start to finish. When I heard the Bombing Mission track for the first time, I knew there was a mission to be taken care of as soon as I started playing. Other great examples of how well done the soundtrack for this game are when you enter the world map and hear the main theme of FFVII and the world map music for when meteor is summoned. The former gives you a great feel of the overworld, while the latter gives you that "This world is doomed!" mood. Another great moody track is Anxious Heart. This really gives out a depressing feel of the game and makes you aware that the town has had a dark past and/or you're coming towards a tragic event. The perfect example for that would be when Aeris is about to die.
I could go on for days on how awesome the soundtrack is, but I'd like to mention Hurry, Shinra Company, Cait Sith's theme, Those Chosen by the Planet and of course, One Winged Angel. Hurry gets me to concentrate on the situation and try and escape from trouble. Shinra Company has that evil corporative feel and I think it's so great, it should be the theme tune for the government and companies such as Viacom, Microsoft and AOL. Cait Sith's theme has a shady feel and warns you that the character might turn your back on you later on. Those Chosen by the Planet screams "Fear me, mortals!" whenever you see Sephiroth and One Winged Angel, it's epic! It's a great choice for the final battle and just like Those Chosen by the Planet, it has a fearsome feeling.
Overall for the soundtrack, it was done extremely well and is certainly in my top 3 for FF soundtracks, but where I'd rank it exactly is for another story.
*** Materia system ***
As usual, Square find ways to make each Final Fantasy game different to each other and this is no exception. The materia system was a whole new way for the characters to learn new abilities, although if they unequipped a certain materia, they will lose those abilities. Despite that, I still find it to be a nice and unique way to learn abilities in this game.
*** Limit Breaks ***
Kind of like the Desperation Attack in FFVI, except Limit Breaks were explained better and were used more often. I just love the idea of getting attacked by the enemies and then let the character go "THAT DOES IT! TIME TO DIE YOU BASTARDS!!" Of course, you don't have to use the Limit Break right away. You can use it whenever you feel like it and that's convenient for when you're about to face a boss. The only problem with Limit Break is if you've got it, you cannot use "Attack" until you use your Limit Break, but I can easily get over that if I just focus on Magic and Summons instead.
*** Humour value ***
I thought there were several humourous moments in FFVII, such as when Barret uppercuts Biggs in the air in Tifa's bar, Barret's and Cid's extreme vulgar language (so bad that they had to censor most of the swearing, lol) and Palmer getting hit by a truck after fighting your characters. There were a few other funny moments in this game as well.
*** Gold Saucer ***
The Gold Saucer is part of the main plot, but to me, it's more of a sidequest considering the amount of things that can be done there. There were so many things to do in the Gold Saucer such as playing the Mog House story game, getting many Battle Points in the Battle Square for Omnislash Limit Break and W-Summon materia, playing the Snowboard, Submarine and Motorcycle mini-games which you also play in the main plot, trying to kick everyone's ass in 3D Battler, obtaining as many points as possible on the Speed Square rollercoaster, and so fourth. It feels like endless amount of fun and that's what a theme park is supposed to be.
*** Chocobos ***
Chocobos were vital to parts of the game, most especially using one to get across the Marsh where Midgar Zolom lives and to get the Gold Chocobo to travel to the cave where Knights of the Round materia lies. Of course, you don't get the Gold Chocobo at the click of your fingers, so you go and work your way to catch the right chocobos, feed them, race them and breed them with the right nuts so you get the right Chocobo colour. It takes some time, but the whole process is fun, except for having to wait for other Chocobos in races. That I find pretty annoying.
*** Emerald and Ruby Weapon ***
Who here remembers the first time they encountered these weapons and thought, "What the fuck just happened?! They wiped out my characters with ease!"? I certainly thought that when I first saw them two. I was never able to defeat them until one time when I started again, I was determined to beat those motherfuckers no matter what. I spent hours raising my main three characters (Cloud, Barret and Cid) and one attempt to beat Emerald Weapon, I did it! I was overjoyed when I saw it dying since I found it to be such a hard ass boss and defeating it felt so satisfying. Same day, I defeated Ruby Weapon and was even more satisfied then.
Unfortunately, Emerald and Ruby are rather easy to beat these days considering the amount of ways to beat them without breaking a sweat and the fact that there are even tougher bosses such as Penance from FFX and Yiazmat from FFXII. However, back in the days, we all saw them as a big challenge.
Extra notes
- There are actually some things I've yet to do in FFVII and the main ones are seeing the dating sequences with Yuffie and Barret. I'm pretty sure there's a few other scenes I've yet to see in this game, but I've covered most of it.
- FFVII became so popular, that it spawned several prequels/sequels and I believe there's now too much. Just one would have been enough for me, although I have to admit, as much as it was cool to see a movie based on this game, I felt Advent Children added nothing to the FFVII universe. I remember Kadaj wanting to reborn Sephiroth, but that just resulted in a 5 - 10 minute battle between Cloud and Sephiroth. I didn't really like the idea of bringing Sephiroth back to life in this film. However, what I did like about Advent Children were the action sequences and the voice acting. Sadly, the disappointing plot brought the film down.
- If you're interested in the rumour site I mentioned earlier on, have a look at the Turks' Alliance. It's an old site, but if you haven't checked it out yet, I recommend having a look to see what weird shit people came up with.
- FFVII glitches such as this one look fun!
- All the FFVII fanboys/girls keep talking about a remake for this game and I wouldn't mind a remake myself, although for nostalgia purposes, I'll take the original version over the remake any day. One of the reasons why I'd like to see a remake is because at some points in the game, I struggle to tell what some of the characters are doing and I'll sometimes get the wrong assumptions as to what they were doing. Also, if they were to remake this game, I would like to see some extras added just like what they've done with the other remakes. However, don't expect Square to remake VII until they've remade V and VI first.
Overall: Like I said, it's the first FF game I ever played and because of how much I enjoy the plot, the sidequests, the music..EVERYTHING, this is why FFVII is #1 on my list. Of course, it won't be #1 for everyone else, but this is my favourite game of all time. It made a huge impact on my gaming interests and I'm very grateful I played this game first before getting the other games.
One last thing, I like to thank Square for moving this game to the Playstation rather than the original idea of it being for the Nintendo 64. I don't have anything against the N64, but if Final Fantasy never moved to the Playstation, I may not be into these games right now. Once again, thank you Square! And a big thank you to Hironobu Sakaguchi for creating the Final Fantasy franchise and going beyond the first and intentionally final FF game you or Square ever make. I still find it a shame that you're no longer with Square, but eh, what can I do? Good luck on your future projects Sakaguchi.

Also known as Final Fantasy III on the Super Nintendo and became a huge hit for the SNES. It's also the last 2D game in the main Final Fantasy series. Another thing, FFVI is the very first old FF game I played. And by old, I mean anything made from I - VI.
What I didn't like:
*** PS1 loading times ***
Just like FFV, the PS1 loading times were a pain in the ass, especially if random battles were very frequent.
*** Certain locations where you cannot raise your characters ***
This problem almost lead me to starting the game all over again. I remember at the end of the Magitek Research Facility where I used the latest save point and oh, there was a strong boss at the end of the place. Luckily, I kept trying and trying until I managed to beat the boss, but I was still unhappy that I almost had to restart the game. And believe me, I'm not the only one who experienced this problem. A few people I know had this problem as well and some even gave up on the game at that point. So whenever Square decide to remake VI, I really hope they don't do this bullshit again.
What I liked:
*** Groundbreaking characters ***
There's a great variety of characters in this game. There are 14 main characters in the game and each have a different special ability. A few examples are Locke's Steal, Terra's Morph, Shadow's Throw, Setzer's Slots and my favourite one, Gogo's Mimic. Oh, and you can have Mog in your team and he has a Dance ability. All these characters have a backstory, except for the secret characters, Gogo and Umaro. You hardly know anything about those two and to be honest, I'm actually happy they kept Gogo's identity discreet. It's caused lots of interesting speculations such as it possibly being Daryll, Emperor Gestahl and many more possibilities.
What was so great about the characters in this game was that there was a great balance of the amount of attention given to the majority of the characters and none of them had too much spotlight. Although Terra was the first character you see, I don't think there was an actual main main character in this game like Cecil, Batz, Cloud, Zidane, etc. and that's what I really liked about this game.
It's not just the playable characters that are awesome, it's the minor ones as well. My personal favourite minor characters are Zeigfried and Ultros. Zeigfried first appears in the Phantom Train and battles Sabin, Shadow and Cyan and later appears helping Celes and Sabin out in Figaro Cave, although he takes all the treasure before you get the chance to. What a bastard, eh? And Umaro, he's an octopus who faces you several times in the World of Balance and becomes a Receptionist for the Dragon's Neck Colosseum in the World of Ruin, which I thought was humourous.
*** Kefka ***
I believe the main villain of FFVI deserves his own section here. Why? Because I think he's the best villain Square have ever made. He's heavily inspired by The Joker and I felt his actions were more evil and villainy than what all the others have done. There is a massive debate over who out of Kefka or Sephiroth is better and my vote goes to Kefka. While Sephiroth killed many people including Aeris and tried to destroy the whole world with a giant meteor, Kefka destroyed everything in his path.
He plotted to poison Doma Castle and succeeds in killing all the innocent people, besides Cyan. He used the powers of the Statues on the Floating Continent to turn on his closest comrade Emperor Gestahl and throwing him off the place. What's more, he used the power of the statues to put the whole world in ruins and SUCCEEDS!! Thus, the World of Ruin was born, and the Cult of Kefka was born. With the Statues under Kefka's control, he had the power to destroy anything in the world at will and those who feared him starting worshipping him or else he'd kill them.
One thing anyone who's played FFVI cannot forget is Kefka's laugh. This is something the villains of the later FF games lack. Kefka will laugh at almost anytime and will even laugh at the moments when he's killing innocent people. Also, how they created that laughing sound, I'm not entirely sure, but it's probably some weird way of producing the sound like Godzilla's roar.
Those are the reasons why I think Kefka is without a doubt the greatest Final Fantasy villain ever. I'm not too sure about THE greatest in video games history, but certainly the best from Final Fantasy and one of the greatest video game villains ever.
*** Amazing storyline ***
I've already explained the main characters having backstory and Kefka's evilness, but the storyline itself, it starts off explaining the War of the Magi, which occurred 1000 years before the events of the game where the Espers fought against the humans. Another key part of the game is the war with the Empire and the Returners. Most of the game, you will be fighting the Empire, but in the World of Ruin, you are focused on Kefka himself. Again, too much to say about the awesomeness of the storyline, but it's certainly one of best in the series.
*** Incredible Soundtrack ***
I certainly think this is the best soundtrack of the retro era of Final Fantasy. Every track perfectly fits the characters, locations and situations. Locke's theme sounds very heroic, Edgar and Sabin's theme made me feel I was welcomed to a castle and Gogo's theme sounds mysterious, which is highly appropriate for the character. There was one character theme that was rather odd and that was Shadow's. For Shadow's theme, you'd expect a dark atmospheric sound, but instead we're given a western-feel composition. I actually find it to be much better than what I was expecting.
The music for the locations were also spot on. The track you hear in the Magitek Research Facility made me feel like I'm in a factory, Dark World told me that the world's in ruins, the Last Dungeon makes me think "Well, this is it. This is where I kick Kefka's ass!" and Kids Run Through the City is very self-explanatory. In some towns where you hear this tune, there are literally kids running around.
Like I said before, I find the soundtrack to be the best of the retro Final Fantasy and any video game fan should listen to this. If I were to make my own 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, this would well be on the list. Infact, why wasn't any of Nobuo's work put on that list?
*** The last dungeon and the ending **
I have to admit, I first hated the idea of having to use three teams to get through the place since I only liked to focus on four characters and just them four only, but a few years later, I realised the great potential of all these characters and raised them all to be able to get through the dungeon. What's more, they all face Kefka at the very end with the epic Dancing Mad, which is without a doubt one of the finest final boss tracks I've ever come across in video games.
What are you rewarded for going through the last dungeon and beating Kefka once and for all? A kickass ending! The ending shows all the characters escaping from Kefka's Tower before it fully collapses and the ending theme is a medley of the characters' themes, which leads to the feeling of "Woo, I'm outta there!" when they all (besides Shadow) escape from the tower on the airship. While the characters are on the airship, the game shows the world recovering from its ruins, hence the track name "Balance is restored."
*** Sidequest bosses ***
Like some of the other games, I always love going after additional bosses that don't add to the main plot. The sidequest bosses here are the eight dragons, Doomgaze and Magic Master who all appear in World of Ruin. The eight dragons are scattered all across the World of Ruin and while they're not as hard as Emerald and Ruby Weapon, it's still fun to find all these dragons and kick their asses. Doomgaze randomly appears when you're on the airship and may wipe out most of your party members whenever it encounters you. Not only that, you only have a few turns before it flees. Luckily, its HP doesn't regenerate, so you can eventually beat him and receive the Bahamut magicite. A similar idea was later used for Ultimate Weapon in FFVII.
Magic Master is located in the Tower of Fanatics and is the strongest boss in the game. Beating him will require some strategy, especially the fact that you cannot use Physical attacks while you're against him. Lastly, there are extra bosses in the Advance, but like FFV Advance, I haven't faced them, so I can't share my thoughts on those bosses.
Overall: Because of all these reasons as to why I love the game, this game is #2 on the list. However, it has been beaten by one other FF game, but if this was the first FF game I ever played, I'm sure this would be my favourite game of all time right now. Also, to all the FF fans who had no intentions to get this game, shame on you! This is a game that shouldn't be overlooked no matter what, especially to anyone who's a fan of at least one game in the series. Yes, I am looking at you FFVII fanboys/girls, but seriously, give this game a go.
If you're wondering which is the best port, I can't really say much for the SNES version since I never owned that console, but that port is very rare these days. However, you can easily get the PS1 or GBA ports and although I don't have FFVI Advance, the GBA version would be the better one to get so you don't have the loading time annoyance.

Final Fantasy IX is known for being a lot more fantasy-orientated than its two predecessors and also the last FF game for the PS1.
What I didn't like
*** The laughable Kuja ***
Kuja is the worst villain in the series. One of the main reasons for that is his horrible appearance. The clothes he wore were really fucked up and the fact that he's the main villain in this game makes me laugh. Not only that, he wasn't the final boss in the game, but rather someone called Necron who came out of the blue. I wasn't even aware of a guy named Necron until the very end, so I felt the final battle in this game was poorly done.
*** Tetra Master ***
Unlike Triple Triad from FFVIII, Tetra Master is much more complicated and some of the rules didn't make any sense. This might have been due to the rulings explained badly in the game, but I still find it baffling when an Eidolon card such as Bahamut gets beaten by a common card which you can obtain from the beginning. When I saw that happening, I was like "What the fuck is wrong?!" What's more, there's this rank system for what cards you have and getting the final rank is just ridiculous. I mean, needing every card in the single game having arrows on every freakin' side?! I don't feel like wasting so much time to get that rank.
There is one other problem with Tetra Master, which is the fact that participating in a card tournament somewhere in the game is mandatory! This rather annoyed me, but at least you don't have to win the tournament in order to advance the game.
What I liked:
*** References to all the previous Final Fantasy game ***
This game makes references to just about every Final Fantasy game made before this. I could even mention a reference for each game besides II:
I - Garland.
III - Doga and Unei's theme.
IV - The dwarf's "Rally-ho!", which was "Lali-ho!" in FFIV.
V - Boco card in Tetra Master.
VI - An old man in Lindblum named Locke.
VII - Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony is used at the near-start of the game by the Tantalus Airship.
VIII - "No Squall and no Cloud shall hinder us."
It's also said that the game makes references to non-Final Fantasy games as well, although I've yet to play the games that FFIX is supposed to be making references to, except for Resident Evil 2, but that sounds really out of place.
*** Awesome characters ***
I have to admit, when I first saw what Zidane looked, I thought "Wtf?", but when I gave the game a go, I was impressed at the characters. This game has a very creative bunch of characters, such as Quina, Freya and Amarant. Brilliant character designs and what else I really like about the main characters is that Adelbert Steiner was the only one out of the lot that was human. This might have alienated some FF fans, but I loved that idea. The only thing Square could have done to make them better is giving Freya and Amarant more backstory.
*** Epic storyline ***
Yet another Final Fantasy game with an excellent plot. Just like FFIV, I could go on for days about how awesome the storyline for this game is, but I'm gonna keep it short. You start off with Zidane and the Tantalus kidnapping the Princess, which leads to all sorts of events throughout the first two discs. Of course, the other two discs were focused on trying to defeat Kuja and while I don't really like Kuja, the storyline for discs 3 and 4 were still amazing.
*** Active Time Event ***
This nice feature Square added to this game contributes to the storyline. I really like how you can choose which event to view whenever available. I thought it was very nice to see how the other characters were doing while you were somewhere else.
*** Mindblowing soundtrack ***
The soundtrack is without a doubt in my top 3 for Final Fantasy soundtracks. While the main melody of the game was used in 10 - 15 tracks, I actually liked each variation of it. And the other tracks, wow! Just about every track in this game is brilliant! A few examples would be the competitive feel of Hunter's Chance, the "What the fuck is going on?!" moment of Fairy's Battle when you first hear it, the peacefulness of Secret Library Daguerro and Terra and the epicness of You're Not Alone. You're Not Alone fitted perfectly with the situation when Zidane begins to question who he is, which I think is one of the best moments in Final Fantasy games. Overall for the soundtrack, it's awesome!
*** Chocobo sidequests ***
I gotta love the Chocobo sidequests they have here. Chocobo Hot and Cold can be a very addictive when you're after certain items and hunting for treasure on the World map was lots of fun, most especially going after the treasure that upgrades your Chocobo.
Overall: It pays a great homage to all the previous Final Fantasy games and I really enjoy the creativity and the fantasy feel of this game. Because of all the great things I mentioned, this is #3 on the list and it deserves to be there.

The first Final Fantasy game for the Playstation 2 and also the second Final Fantasy game I ever played. This game introduced several new things to the Final Fantasy franchise, most especially voice acting. Some of the changes in this game alienated some FF fans, but I gave them a fair chance. This game is also notable for being the last FF game made by 'Squaresoft' and a lot claim the series died when Squaresoft was merged with Enix, but I say bollocks to that. They've made good games since.
What I didn't like
*** Lack of overworld map ***
As much as I enjoyed the locations in the game, I really wish there was an overworld map in this game. As a result of no overworld map, you have no control over the airship, except telling it where to go. This I felt took away some fun I had on the other FF games, but despite that, I still continued with the game. However, I did like how you could walk all the way from Besaid to Zanarkand without using an airship, although some travelling overseas would be necessary in order to do that.
*** Not so great soundtrack ***
Alright, most of the tracks weren't bad, but some were really sub-par for Nobuo's standards. Kinda hard to believe that he went from something epicly epic to a not so great soundtrack. However, FFX's soundtrack had some moments such as To Zanarkand, Other World and Suteki Da Ne. Otherworld is a heavy rock track which was used for the Blitzball FMV at the start and the battle with Braska's Final Aeon and I do wonder if it inspired Nobuo Uematsu to form The Black Mages band (Basically, this is his work mixed with heavy metal). And Suteki Da Ne, kudos to Rikki and Uematsu for making one of the very few J-Pop songs I actually enjoy.
*** The horrendous Blitzball mini-game ***
It's not too bad when you play it a few times, but when you're wanting to fully upgrade Wakka's ultimate weapon, you'll have to play Blitzball for hours on end and believe me, it becomes tiresome as fuck. I've played Blitzball too much and I now hate this mini-game. To me, Blitzball is a chore and I dread it everytime I have to play it on FFX.
*** Yojimbo's cheap ass Zanmato ability ***
What were Square thinking when they allowed this move to kill ANYTHING?! Seriously, any boss is vulnerable to this move and allows the player to kill anything, so the challenge for a the strongest bosses in the game goes out the window. Odin had more reasonable limitations by only being able to instantly kill normal enemies, but why Yojimbo didn't have that limitation, I have no idea. I'll admit, I did this a lot when I was younger, but now I take the challenges seriously and try and beat them legitimately.
*** Yu Yevon as the final boss ***
What were Square thinking here as well? Yu Yevon has to be the worst final boss I've ever faced. The reasons why I think Yu Yevon is such a joke is because:
1. Dying is impossible because of the stupid Auto-Life on all the time.
2. You can kill him in one single hit if your characters can take 99999 HP off one enemy.
3. He is vulnerable to Zombie and guess what that means? You can use Phoenix Down on him and he's dead right away.
Although facing Braska's Final Aeon before Yu Yevon and your aeons was a challenge if your characters aren't that strong, this is simply a joke.
*** None of the characters knowing Tidus' name ***
This really got me about FFX. Tidus travels throughout Spira with several other people he didn't meet until the incident in his Zanarkand and not once they ask him his name. I mean, who on earth would travel around the world with someone and don't even think of asking their name? The only reason why they didn't allow the characters to call Tidus' name is because you can name Tidus whatever you want, but really, they shouldn't have allowed you to give Tidus a custom name. What they did here was just ridiculous.
*** THE FUCKING SEQUEL! ***
The ending and the extreme success of the game spawned a sequel and at first when I was 12, I thought it would be a good idea to tell the players what happened to Tidus at the end, but when I look back at it, what happens to Tidus at the end should have remained a mystery, just like Gogo's true identity. Another thing that really sucks about FFX-2 is the music. I mean, Pop Idol-esque music? Lack of traditional FF themes such as the Chocobo music? WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?!?! Despite the suckiness of this game, I'll give it something for having a battle system that's playable, unlike FFII.
What I liked
*** Voice acting ***
FFX was the first in the series to have voice acting and I really liked the voice acting in general here, especially they hired John DiMaggio to voice act for this game. The only real downfall for the voice acting in FFX is Yuna taking more breaks in her sentences than Stevie from Malcolm in the Middle.
*** Challenging bosses ***
There are some bosses in the main event that were difficult for the characters' stats at the time, but what I'm really talking about are the dark aeons, Penance and the Original monsters from Battle Arena. The dark aeons and Penance are available for PAL and International versions only and since I'm a PAL user, I was able to fight these extra bosses and I'm really impressed at them. They're very hard to defeat and require max stats for everything besides luck, MP and HP, although you'd still need a lot for them. Most of the Original monsters in the Battle Arena are easy to defeat compared to the dark aeons, but Nemesis is still a great challenge. Of course, this is assuming you don't be a cheap ass by Zanmato'ing them all.
*** Sphere Grid ***
I know quite a lot of people that hate this game for the Sphere Grid system. However, I like how the Sphere Grid was done since it allowed you to move around the place and increase your stats and learn new abilities. As a result of this, EXP and levels are non-existent in this game, although you gain Ability Points for your Sphere levels, which are used for the Sphere Grid. This is the sort of changes I like in Final Fantasy, where it's a bit weird at start, but it's good once you get used to it. However, I would have liked it if Square added something to search for a specific sphere to make it easier to find where you want to be.
*** The lifespan of this game ***
It takes around 40 hours to get through the main story, but if you're going to focus on sidequests as well, you could be spending over 100 hours on this game. I certainly did the first time. Infact, I got stuck in a few places and some bosses, I lead some of my characters to the wrong direction in the Sphere Grid and a few other shit happened on my first save that I ended up spending over 220 hours on this game. Despite how many hours I spent on it, I had a hell lot of fun playing it and that's what really matters.
*** Very good storyline ***
The storyline is obviously what kept me playing this game for so long. What I wondered throughout the game were "Will Tidus return to his Zanarkand?", "What does the Final Aeon look like?", "When will the other characters stop treating Tidus like shit?", "What else will Sin do to Spira?" and later on when I heard what happens to the Summoners who summon their Final Aeon, I wondered "How will they beat Sin?" The only downfall for the storyline is how obvious Seymour was a villain all along. I mean, as soon as I saw his appearance, I thought, "Is this a carbon copy of Sephiroth?" and I knew someone like him had to be evil, so I found that to be predictable. Besides that, I enjoy the storyline a lot.
Overall: Final Fantasy X had several changes compared to the previous instalments and I accepted them. I'm rather nitpicky about several things here, but if I put them aside, this is a brilliant game and as this was the second FF game I ever played, this and VII made me want to play FFVIII and IX and then play all the older games. So a big thanks to this game for giving me more interest in the franchise.

Known as Final Fantasy II on the SNES, but I'm not calling it FFII here due to playing the actual II and III. Despite that, I can see it being extra special for the non-Japanese gamers considering for them, it was their first FF game that had Chocobos, a guy named Cid, Summoners, the dreaded Malboros, Active Time Battle and a lot more. What I mentioned have become recurring elements in the Final Fantasy games.
What I didn't like
*** American title name ***
I have to admit, it annoys me when people STILL call this game FFII when we clearly have the actual FFII on PS1, GBA and PSP. I know there are people who originally knew this as FFII on the SNES, but the mistake has been corrected now for non-Japanese gamers.
*** Was a sequel necessary? ***
OK, it's not actually a problem with the game itself and I haven't played this game (this game is yet to come out outside Japan), but really, does this game need a sequel? The storyline had no plotholes or anything, so I feel a sequel to this game is as unnecessary as Disney sequels. Let's hope they start calming down with these sequels after this one.
What I liked
*** Brilliant storyline ***
FFIV's plot is full of epicness (same for almost every other FF game :P), but this one is extra special. I could go on for days about how awesome the plot is, but to try and keep it short, I'm gonna point out the key parts of this game. The main character Cecil who starts off as a dark knight is forced by King Baron to terrorize the innocent town of Mysidia (a place full of Black and White mages) and steal their crystal. This leads to Cecil doubting the king and is discharged from his rank.
Along the way, you'll meet several characters and unlike the majority of the later games, you have no control over your party members, so whoever is in your team or not depends on the main events along the way. This was set out well and I liked how each party member left. Not only you're given the best characters at the end of the game, but those you assumed were dead actually show up all of sudden during the battle with the Giant of Babil.
Another awesome part of the storyline is Golbez, who was originally thought to be the main villain of the game, but turned out to be brainwashed by the actual villain Zemus. Not only that, it's revealed later on that he's Cecil's brother.
*** Yet another excellent soundtrack by Nobuo Uematsu ***
Again, excellent music here. Some of the highlights in the FFIV soundtrack are the overworld theme, the romantic Theme of Love, the "Oh shit, I'm in trouble!" feel of The Dreadful Fight and the very evilish theme of Golbez's. These are some great examples of how awesome the soundtrack for FFIV truly is. This is yet another soundtrack that proves Nobuo to be a fucking genius at music composition. Infact, I've heard Theme of Love is so famous in Japan, the melody is taught in music lessons over there. Those lucky bastards.
Overall, brilliant soundtrack. I've listened to some of the tracks from the DS version and they are as great as ever, but I still prefer the old retro feel of the tracks for this game.
Extra notes
- Have you ever come across the term "Spoony Bard" from anywhere? This is where the term originated from. I actually find it funny and amusing when just one translated line turned out to be quite a famous quote among gaming fans and the Internet.
- The Bahamut sprite figure you've seen on my flashes came from this game! Infact, the drawn version of Bahamut on my avatar is based on the Bahamut from FFIV.
Overall: This is undoubtedly a wonderful addition to the series. The music, the storyline and the characters were fantastic. I strongly recommend anyone who's a fan of the series to pick this game up if they haven't already. Whether it be the SNES, PS1 or GBA version, it doesn't really matter, although I cannot say much for the DS remake right now considering I've yet to play it. However, I'll let you all know what I think of the game when I get it.
