Entry #88
Over the last few months, I've had thoughts on how many things are wrong with the video games industry. I intended to make a list entitled "Top 10 things that are wrong with the video games industry today", but after some inspiration from some rant series I've come across such as Silent Rob's Gamestop rants and TheArchfiend's Theme Park rants as well as Omega-2's rants which I read whenever they're up, I've decided to make a series of text rants on what's wrong with the video game industry today.
Don't get me wrong, I love video games, but unfortunately, there is far too much bullshit in the video games industry and I will rant on most or everything about what's wrong with it today. I'm going to try and make a rant every week or two depending on my motivation or if I have other things to focus on. This will go on until I have nothing left to rant on and after that, I'll only make a new rant when new things pop up in mind. I already have at least ten topics to rant on, so this will go on for a reasonable amount of time.
To start off, I'll be ranting on a handhold console that was released just recently, the Nintendo DSi. Supposedly an update to the DS Lite, but really, this is more of a downgrade from the original DS and I can easily tell that from the two main problems:
1. There is no GBA slot and has been made way for the SD card slot;
2. There is a camera, which the GBA slot is gone in favour for.
The first issue is really bad since I still play GBA games from time to time and so do many others and I'm still annoyed at how the DS can't play GB or GBC games. As an "update" of the DS Lite, Nintendo should have tried to make it compatible with GB and GBC game cartridges as well as keeping the GBA slot. If they did that, I would have traded in my original DS and get the Nintendo DSi right away, despite the stupid ass camera feature.
As for the camera feature, why? Just why? Why on earth did Nintendo even think of this dumbass idea? Handheld consoles are for playing games on, not for taking pictures and putting them onto MySpace. And on top of that, a 0.3 Megapixel camera will look terrible and with £150 you could be spending on a DSi, you could get a 10 Megapixel camera with that money.
The only use the camera has are for the DSiWare games, but by looking at the library right now, there's nothing worth getting. This just sounds like EyeToy all over again where the games compatible with that were only fun for a while and got boring really really quick. The only use the EyeToy has nowadays is for webcam (yes, it's possible to do that). The DSi on the other hand, if it were to be used for a webcam, I'd rather use the EyeToy or better yet, the built-in webcam on my laptop which isn't fantastic, but gets the job done.
Another (pointless) feature the DSi has is a music player. You'll be able to play music by having an SD card of any size, but sadly, that fails as you could actually use that SD card you're holding for the Creative Zen products and that has space for music and videos to begin with. So really, if one of the main reasons you're getting a DSi is for the music player, you might as well forget it and get a Creative Zen or an iPod instead.
The only thing that would make the DSi actually worth getting is if there WILL be a handheld version of Virtual Console, where you can download GB and GBC games. This wouldn't be too bad for any games that are really hard to obtain these days as in a game where you'd be having to take out £40+ from your wallet in order to get it. However, I'm not sure how many rare GB/GBC games there are and I'd rather not get the DSi just to download the rare games. Even if they go ahead and release those games, they'll only take AAAAAAAAAAGES to release them all, just like the Wii's Virtual Console. I'd rather have a DS that can play the cartridges of those games!
So all in all, the DSi is a complete and utter piece of shit that should have never seen the light of day. This is perhaps Nintendo's worst idea since Virtual Boy. Removing the GBA slot was a terrible mistake and they should have tried to make GB and GBC cartridges backwards compatible. The music player and camera features are extremely pointless since with £150, you might as well get a digital camera, an MP3 Player or even a PSP. Those three have way more value than the DSi.
I just hope Nintendo realise what a terrible mistake they made with the DSi, but sadly, they'll only care what the casual gamers think and ignore their true fans. I wouldn't say this is the last nail on the coffin for Nintendo, but they're getting there.
